What is a Sump Pump?

Probably the very worst thing that can happen to your home and that easily could – as in not a hurricane rolling over it – is water damage soaking into the foundation. If water pools up under your home or in the basement, and you don’t notice it there, the foundation can be soaked and ruined. Your house could be sitting atop an unstable, unsafe slab of dirt or concrete.

Events that can cause massive flooding include:

Getting water out from under your home once it has pooled there is pretty difficult. Ideally, you will never give it a chance to collect to the point that it starts to wreck your foundation. In order to do that, you probably will want to install a sump pump.

What is a Sump Pump & What Does It Do?

A sump pump is essentially like any other water pump system but it is installed into the basement, cellar, or atop the foundation in a sump basin. What is a sump basin? It is a divot or bowl-shaped region in the foundation that is meant to collect all the water that may leak down there, conveniently pooling it into one spot. With an operation sump pump down there, flooding worries are a thing of the past.

Sump pumps are usually controlled by a switch within the home and connected to a hose that runs out to the street. When it starts to rain heavily or water is noticed in the cellar, the sump pump is turned on and the water is extracted from the basin and out to the gutters where it does no harm and is washed away. Sump pumps should not be run while there is no water in the sump basin, however, as this could cause the pump to break apart or wear down.
